Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a 29-year-old Maryland resident, was mistakenly deported to El Salvador by the Trump administration in March 2025, despite a court order prohibiting his removal due to fears of gang-related persecution.

He is currently imprisoned in a notorious Salvadoran facility. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the administration must work to return him, emphasizing the need to facilitate his release and restore his case to its proper legal state. The administration had argued it could not reverse the deportation, even after admitting it was a mistake.
Claims that Abrego Garcia was involved with the MS-13 gang lack evidence, and he has no criminal record.
The case has sparked significant political and legal debate, with Democratic lawmakers advocating for his return and criticizing the administration’s actions as undermining the rule of law.
Senator Chris Van Hollen met with Abrego Garcia in El Salvador to assess his condition and push for his release. Legal experts and judges have condemned the deportation as unlawful, highlighting concerns about due process and executive overreach.
