Recognition signals global confidence in Kenyan banking as Equity’s footprint, balance sheet, and resilience draw international spotlight

Equity Bank Kenya has received a prestigious international accolade in London, recognising its outstanding performance and transformational impact across East and Central Africa’s financial landscape.
The honour, awarded during the Global Finance Leadership Awards held in the UK capital, positions Equity as a model of inclusive banking, financial resilience, and cross-border
The London-based committee cited Equity’s robust financial figures and inclusive banking model as decisive factors:
• Asset Growth: Equity Group Holdings posted a 9% year-on-year growth in total assets, rising to KSh 1.69 trillion in FY2024, maintaining its position as one of the region’s largest banks by asset base.
• Customer Base: With over 19.5 million customers as of Q1 2025, Equity commands one of the largest retail banking clienteles in Sub-Saharan Africa, driven by its digitisation strategy and agency banking model.
• Profitability: In FY2024, the Group reported a net profit of KSh 46.1 billion, a 7% increase from the previous year. The Kenyan subsidiary contributed nearly 63% of this figure.
• Cross-Border Influence: With subsidiaries in DRC, Rwanda, Tanzania, South Sudan, and Uganda, Equity’s cross-border transactions and regional trade financing have become critical enablers of intra-African commerce.
Strategic
Equity’s recognition also stems from its role in driving financial inclusion through:
• Digital Transformation: Over 97% of all transactions are now conducted via digital platforms, reducing operational costs and expanding rural reach.
• MSME Financing: More than KSh 210 billion has been disbursed to micro, small and medium enterprises over the last three years—fuelling entrepreneurship and job creation.
• Education and Health: Through the Equity Group Foundation, the bank has spent over KSh 30 billion since inception on social impact programmes.
Dr. Angela Muriuki, a financial analyst with StratAfrica Capital, noted:
“Equity’s London honour reflects not just strong numbers but a well-executed growth narrative. It’s a blueprint for African banks seeking to scale sustainably while deepening financial access.”
The award enhances Kenya’s standing as a competitive financial hub. It also affirms the international confidence in the country’s regulatory environment, particularly the Central Bank of Kenya’s prudential oversight.
With other Kenyan lenders eyeing regional expansion, Equity’s spotlight in London may ignite further foreign investor interest in Nairobi’s financial services sector.
Equity Bank CEO Dr. James Mwangi, who received the award in person, reaffirmed the Group’s ambition to become “Africa’s first globally scalable financial institution built on African values.” He hinted at further expansion and deeper integration with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) strategy
